THE PAINTED VEIL (1934)

MGM
Director: Richard Boleslawski
Cast: Greta Garbo, Herbert Marshall, George Brent, Warner Oland, Jean Hersholt, Kaye Luke

The Painted Veil was a film about adultery based on a novel by Somerset Maugham, set in China. We see here a Garbo like no other Garbo in her film career. She alternates between loneliness, wonderment and mysticism with her Austrain doctor husband whom she loves and a romantic diplomatic attaché whom she can't resist. In the end, Garbo comes to her senses. She leaves the diplomatic attaché and goes back to her husband, repentent and mournful. Throughout the film audiences were treated to a dazzling array of gowns by Adrian.
