Anna Christie (1930)
Director: Clarence Brown
Cast: Greta Garbo, Charles Bickford, Marie Dressler, George F. Marion
"Gimme a whisky, ginger ale on the side. An' don't be stingy, babee."
It was Garbo's talkie debut and it was a smash hit! Audiences flocked to movie houses to hear what she sounded like. And what they heard, they liked. It was a husky voice with a mild Swedish accent that perfectly matched her persona. For two years MGM had sent her to a good voice coach to improve her English for this film, based on a stage play by Eugene O'Neill. Garbo played a Swedish American woman who was a prostitute in the Midwest but comes to New York to help her ailing father run his tugboat.
