EARLY YEARS (1905-1925)

Greta Louisa Gustafsson was born in Stockholm, Sweden on September 18, 1905. She was the third child of Karl Gustafsson, a laborer, and Anna Lovisa. She had an older brother, Sven Gustafsson, and an older sister, Alva Garbo, who also went into the movies in Sweden but died
at the age of 22 from cancer. The family was poor so at 16 years old, Garbo worked in a barbershop to help her family, since her father died in 1920. In 1921 Garbo landed a sales position job at PUB Department Store; it was here that she began her film career doing commercial films and modeling. By 1925, with two major films behind her, Garbo and Stiller were both signed to an MGM contract. They sailed to America.
