CONQUEST (1937)

MGM
Director: Clarence Brown
Cast: Greta Garbo, Charles Boyer, Reginald Owen, Alan Marshal, Henry Stephenson, Leif Erickson, Dame May Witty, Maria Ouspenskaya

Conquest was Garbo's most expensive movie and her longest, at almost two hours. It cost MGM close to $3.5 million to make. It was a historical drama about the relationship between Polish Countess Marie Walewska and Napoleon. In truth, it was Garbo meets Napoleon. Charles Boyer played Napoleon and managed to upstage Garbo. In Europe it was released under the title, "Marie Walewska." It did well overseas but was a flop in the US.
