Garbo played Marguerite Gautier, the 19th century Parisian courtesan who falls in love with a naïve young man, Armand Duval, only to realize that marriage is impossible because of her loose reputation. Marguerite dies tragically in Armand's arms from tuberculosis. This famous tearjerker was based on the 1852 book by Alexander Dumas and won Garbo the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress of 1937.
